SUMMARY OF BIDDING APPROACHES AFTER 2NT
Type of Hand Approach
Major suit bust Use Jacoby, pass opener's response
Minor suit bust Use minor suit transfer
Weak 5-5, minors Transfer to diamonds, pass a 4C response
(Hope for the best if opener passes 3NT)
Great bid with 6 diamonds and 5 clubs
Invitational hands:
Long minor Transfer to minor, see if opener has help
Long major Take a view--there is no way to invite
Game-going hands:
Both minors Transfer to clubs, then bid 4D
(Do you really want to bypass 3NT?)
Doesn't say which minor is longer
Both majors Bid 3H (Jacoby) followed by 4H
Major, 5-3-3-2 hand Use Jacoby, then bid 3NT
Spades, unbalanced Use Stayman, then bid spades
Hearts, unbalanced Bid 3D followed by 3S (UHC)
Six-card major Use Texas convention
Minor-major 5-4 Use Stayman, don't show minor
Slam try hands:
Both minors Transfer to clubs, then bid 4D
(Doesn't say which minor is longer)
Both majors 5-5 Bid 3C, then 3S, then 4H
Major, 5-3-3-2 hand Use Jacoby, then bid 4NT
Balanced, 5-6 clubs Bid 3S to show clubs, then 4NT
Unbalanced, 5-6 clubs Bid 3C, then 4C, then whatever
Balanced, 5-6 diamonds Bid 3C, then 4D, then 4NT
Unbalanced, 5-6 diamonds Bid 3C, then 4D, then whatever
Balanced, 6-card major Use Jacoby, then raise
(strong suit)
Balanced, 6-card major Start with Stayman
(weak suit)
Unbalanced, 6-card
major (weak or strong) Use Stayman with spades, UHC with hearts
Clubs-major, 5-4 If strong enough, transfer to the clubs
and then bid the major (forcing).
Diamonds-major, 5-4 Bid 3C, then 4D (The 3NT transfer to
diamonds is not forcing)
